AI and Human Connection: Crafting Moments that Can't Be Automated

AI and Human Connection: Crafting Moments that Can't Be Automated

Love it or hate it: the AI Era is here. And here to stay. New AI products, articles about the future of human-AI relationships, conversations about AI-generated content, new promises of productivity and new prophecies of doom are being shoved through our screens and hammered into our habits, rewiring our individual and collective psyche at every turn.

While we’ve all benefited (let’s be honest) from AI’s ability to streamline workflows and crunch unthinkable amounts of data, we also know (let’s be honest) that its negative effects are just downright…bleak. AI’s use as a stand-in for humans is only adding to our physical disconnectedness, while the sheer bombardment of data it brings adds to our emotional disconnectedness. We’ve been witnessing a growing loneliness epidemic over the last decade, which AI is only adding to. And to top it off, from deep-fakes to hallucinations, AI is producing content that makes deciphering what’s real from what’s not feel impossible.

At TENCUE, we’re rooted in the arts and theater—worlds where the value of a shared, lived experience is non-negotiable. So our first question is this: for those of us in the business of building human-to-human connections, what does the AI Era actually mean? We exist to build the kind of connection that can't be spoofed by a prompt or simulated in a cloud. But are these connections even relevant anymore?

We exist to build the kind of connection that can't be spoofed by a prompt or simulated in a cloud. But are these connections even relevant anymore?

First, let’s dig into the science of connection.

Research shows that when people experience art and ideas together, they feel a greater sense of social connectedness¹. These experiences create “collective effervescence,” or group synchronization: a profound embodied experience of connection that transcends the individual².

So, while brand-speak has commodified the word “authentic,” the reality remains: shared spaces create moments that defy automation. In a world of synthetic noise, audiences are starving for the un-fakeable. When a brand stops performing and starts being real, trust is built because emotion is ignited. The Greeks called this “catharsis,” a collective emotional clearing. When you connect ideas with emotions, it improves cognition, retention, and performance—the very things our events strive to cultivate³˒⁴.

The AI Era isn't killing the need for human-to-human connection—it’s making it the most valuable currency we have.

For an event company like TENCUE, whose baseline is the physical, lived experience, how do we continue to build authenticity in an increasingly synthetic world? How do we either use AI tools, or work around them, without losing our pulse?

Using AI To Support and Enhance

We aren’t saying there’s no room for AI in events. That would be unrealistic of us. Because AI can be transformative. It’s a powerhouse for workflow efficiencies: researching speakers, stress-testing creative strategies, and killing the "blank page" syndrome during script drafts. Onsite, it can close the gap between audience and ideas, handling real-time transcription, translation, and session summaries that make content more accessible. It can even drive personalization and, yes, content creation (provided it’s tied to a meaningful strategy and not just used as "tech for tech’s sake" spectacle).

But here is the line in the sand: AI should be used to clear the path for the human experience, not stand in its way. It handles the data so we can handle the soul. Because as powerful as these tools are, they still can't manufacture the electricity of a room full of people sharing a common moment. They can't simulate the goosebumps, the collective gasp, or the belonging that comes from being physically present.

In fact, the more synthetic our daily lives become, the more we crave the opposite. The AI Era isn't killing the need for human-to-human connection—it’s making it the most valuable currency we have.

The question for us isn’t "How do we use AI to replace interaction?" It’s "How do we use it to make those interactions deeper, smarter, and more resonant?" We’re building shared moments that move audiences to action. AI is just one of the gears that helps us get there.

What are the ways you are integrating AI into your events that enhance the human-to-human experience?
